Summary:
In the article, “School boy smoking: a cause for concern!” Ike Vavi discusses some of the problems associated with youth smoking. He talks about the danger caused by smoking and how it is a disturbing trend. One of the issues is that it is no longer taboo for young boys to smoke. He points out the way they no longer even try to hide it from adults anymore. Vavi also talks about how the adults are enabling this unhealthy behavior. One example, he points to is the shop owner who is ready to sell cigarettes to the boys that are too young to smoke. Another factor for Vavi, is that parents are not as involved as much in their children’s lives. Finally, Vavi talks about the role peer pressure plays in a young person’s decision to smoke. He claims that peer pressure plays a big role in this problem of young people starting to smoke. He said that many young boys think that it makes them appear manlier and raises their status among their peers. Vavi claims that the way to combat this is through education and stiffer penalties for those who sell cigarettes to young people.
Reaction:
I agree with this article. Many people that I know start to smoke because of pressure from their friends. Young people also tend to do the same things they see other people do, especially when those people are their own age. The article also points out another factor. That is the people who provide the cigarettes. People have tried many things to stop smoking using various methods. They have restricted advertising for cigarettes and made it harder for underage people to buy them. However, the best way to stop smoking is to make it uncool. As long as young people think that smoking makes them look cool, they will find a way to get them.
